“Hand of Hope” The Spina Bifida Story 10 years later… I’ve noticed for some strange reason the story about Samuel Armas started circulating like crazy everywhere. This is a picture of the same baby holding the finger 9 years older. I’m sure everyone’s read the amazing story behind it.. but there’s also a part that isn’t as well known. Basically.. the baby was supposed to be completely anesthetized during the procedure, but the photographer (Michael Clancy) caught this moment saying the baby was awake to hold the surgeons finger. The doctor’s say Samuel wasn’t awake to grab the finger, just that the picture timing makes it look like samuel reached out to grab it. Then the photographer went on to write books about the reality of the surgery and how the surgeons involved tried to hide the fact the baby was awake. From my knowledge the case still is not settled. This is still an incredible picture. It’s a shame that all this has to surround it even though it is completely logical why it does.
